National Grid powers up up for a renewables future

Few companies can claim to be as central to British life as National Grid, the power system operator whose cables and pipes keep homes heated, kettles boiling and factories humming. Sitting in his office overlooking Trafalgar Square, Mr Pettigrew says is confident a deal will go through smoothly, noting that the buyer will be subject to the same safeguards on safety and security of supply as National Grid. Shares in National Grid have fallen 12 per cent in the past month as investors switched into growth stocks after Donald Trump was elected US president on a platform of more expansionary fiscal policy. National Grid has turned to energy users to help ease the volatility, offering payments for companies to reduce demand when supplies are tight. Investments being made by National Grid in batteries and smart meters shows that this company "Lifer" sees the need to adapt.
