Dido Harding looks to public service after TalkTalk

Dido Harding was not the most obvious candidate to take over one of the country's largest broadband companies when she was appointed TalkTalk chief executive seven years ago. Ms Harding, who later became a Conservative peer adopting the name Baroness Harding of Winscombe, studied philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford university, where she was an contemporary of David Cameron, and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Ms Harding immediately made a mark as a thorn in the side of BT, calling for regulators to clear the way for more effective competition in the UK telecoms market. The cyber attack on TalkTalk knocked confidence in the company as Ms Harding, looking drained and distraught, warned that all of its 4m customers were at risk. That number was revised down radically as the effect of the attack became clear but Ms Harding defended her strategy to go public and has lobbied for all companies to be required to report cyber attacks immediately.
