BT set to appoint Jan du Plessis as chairman

BT is set to reveal on Thursday that Jan du Plessis, the South African-born City grandee, will become its new chairman, replacing Sir Mike Rake. Mr du Plessis, chairman of the miner Rio Tinto, was named on the shortlist for the job alongside Douglas Flint, the outgoing chairman of HSBC, last month. Another person added that Mr du Plessis would step down from the board of Rio along with the announcement of his appointment at BT. During his eight-year stint as chairman of Rio, Mr du Plessis launched a $15bn rights issue to repair the miner's balance sheet and saw off a takeover approach from Glencore. Mr du Plessis, who holds South African and British passports, joined Rio as a non-executive director in 2008 and was appointed chairman a year later. When Rio named Jean-Sébastien Jacques as its new chief executive a year ago, Mr du Plessis made it clear that he would only remain as chairman for a couple of years.
