Former Tesco finance chief joins food tycoon Boparan

Laurie McIlwee, a former Tesco finance chief who was cleared last year of involvement in a profits overstatement, is to help run the restaurant interests of food tycoon Ranjit Boparan. Mr Boparan's restaurant business said: "Laurie McIlwee is working within the Boparan private office as chairman of the restaurant team, assisting Tom Crowley and the team with the execution of strategy." Mr McIlwee resigned as Tesco's chief finance officer in 2014, ending a 15-year career with the grocer a few days before it announced full-year results. Five months later Tesco said it had overstated its first-half profit by £250m, leading to the suspension of four executives. Last year, Mr Boparan also bought Bernard Matthews, the turkey producer, out of administration in a deal that was criticised by politicians for being structured to benefit secured creditors to the detriment of the pension scheme.
