Nerves strained in Ellesmere Port at Peugeot takeover

Ellesmere Port has got used to fretting about the future of the car plant that has helped sustain it for 52 years - but nerves were strained more than usual by the Peugeot SA takeover of Vauxhall announced on Monday. Several of his uncles worked for Vauxhall, which is now in the hands of Peugeot SA after its purchase of General Motors' European arm, and a cousin still does along with about 20 friends. "My dad has a pension from there. If he doesn't get that, he won't be able to live. Without Vauxhalls, Ellesmere Port is a ghost town. If there are no jobs here, people are going to leave." One worker said dealing with Peugeot, part owned by the French state and the founding family, would be different to GM. Politics, as much as productivity, would play a role. Ellesmere Port grew up as an industrial town with factories and chemical works along the Mersey.
