Virgin takes on BT with faster broadband service

Virgin Media is set to launch a UK broadband service offering ultrafast speeds of up to 300 Mbps as it looks to stifle the impact of BT's upgrade to faster internet speeds. The cable company will launch a new product called Virgin Fibre that will offer speeds of between 100 Mbps and 300 Mbps, a third faster than its current top rate. The new broadband packages will be advertised as offering "Speeds that start where our rivals finish", as Virgin looks to damp the impact of a move by BT's Openreach division to speed up the national broadband network, enabling other companies including Sky and TalkTalk to offer ultrafast speeds. The move to speed up copper has proved contentious, with government ministers and rival telecoms businesses calling for more advanced "Full-fibre" networks to be laid. Tom Mockridge, chief executive of Virgin Media, said that the push to raise speeds had paid off in customer additions, with more users looking for faster broadband to support gaming and entertainment use.
