Whitbread shares jump 5% on strong Premier Inn sales

Whitbread shares seem to be enjoying a caffeine boost, rising as much as 5 per cent after the owner of the Costa coffee chain and Premier Inn hotels revealed an upbeat start to the year. A 4.7 per cent rise in like-for-like sales for the hotels business was, as Credit Suisse puts it, "Nicely ahead of consensus". Deutsche Bank and at Stifel described the company's update as "Reassuring". At pixel time, shares were up by 5 per cent to £40.46.
