January sales: M&S and Tesco drop at the open
Investors are taking a dim view of the latest sales figures from Tesco and Marks and Spencer. The near 2 per cent rise in like for like sales over the festive period was some distance behind analysts' forecasts for a rise of up to 3.2 per cent. At the open, shares dropped 3.5 per cent to 204p. Marks and Spencer displayed deepening strain in its clothing line and persistent problems in food. Its shares dropped 2.6 per cent to 315p.
