Morrisons Christmas sales rise 3%

Supermarket chain WM Morrison enjoyed a near 3 per cent boost to like-for-like sales over the Christmas period, claiming to have done it with "Friendliness even at the busiest times". The 3 per cent year-on-year boost in the ten weeks to January 7 came with a sharper rise during the peak of the festive rush, with sales up in by 3.7 per cent over the later six weeks of that period. Shoppers appear to have been treating themselves; sales from the premium range were up by 25 per cent. Department store chain Debenhams was disappointed while Next upgraded its profit forecasts. Mothercare suffered a 25 per cent drop to its shares after a drab festive period.
