Unilever has chosen to protect itself from British capitalism
Rotterdam, the Dutch city that Unilever has chosen as its new unified headquarters, is even further away from this rich history than London. Unilever has chosen the brand of capitalism it prefers. Unilever will be safer from takeovers as a Dutch business. Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte has abolished a tax on company dividends for foreign investors, a move Unilever lobbied for. The UK prime minister has no obligation to soften the UK's tough style of capitalism to hang on to waverers such as Unilever.
