Ocado: ‘Microsoft of Retail’?

Ocado shares climbed 5.5 per cent on Wednesday after Peel Hunt argued the company has the potential to become the "Microsoft of Retail" by transforming itself into a core platform for the sector's logistics. By becoming the open industry standard, Ocado would gain "Higher penetration, stronger control and greater revenue", Peel Hunt said. Ocado currently provides software used by clients in their customer fulfilment centres and its first deal, with UK supermarket Wm Morrisons, was an exclusive agreement. Ocado was the best performer on the FTSE 100 on Wednesday. Its share price has surged more than 157 per cent for the year to date as concerns over Ocado's ability to secure licensing deals has evaporated.
