Paul Dacre departure from Daily Mail ends a Fleet Street era
A Fleet Street era will come to an end in November, when Paul Dacre steps down as editor of the Daily Mail after 26 years in charge. His announcement to staff this week that he would become chairman of Associated Newspapers, the newspaper division of the Mail's parent company, Daily Mail and General Trust, sparked a range of reactions. His many critics celebrated the departure of arguably the most divisive UK newspaper editor in a generation while others lamented the imminent exit of a man who led the Mail to great commercial, as well as editorial, success. Under Mr Dacre, the Mail became Fleet Street's most influential force, assuming a role held in the 1980s by Rupert Murdoch's The Sun. The chances of arch-rival Geordie Greig, editor of the Mail on Sunday, were slim, one observer remarked, because as chairman, Mr Dacre would in effect be looking over his shoulder on a daily basis.
