Debenhams takes risks with revamp
Debenhams talked of expanding its UK estate from 160 shops to 240 and doubling the number of overseas stores. "It is no secret that retail market conditions have changed dramatically in the past two years, and that a combination of structural change and extremely volatile market conditions have presented significant challenges for all department store businesses," Debenhams said. "Our Debenhams Redesigned strategy has been created with these market conditions front of mind." Sergio Bucher, a former Amazon executive appointed chief executive of Debenhams two years ago, divides opinion. Mike Ashley, the chief executive of Sports Direct, is unimpressed, recently declaring that Debenhams "Never does anything I suggest".
