Ocado: zeroing in

On Tuesday Ocado gave some tantalising glimpses of its relationship with the US's second-largest retailer, which it outlined in May. Kroger will order 20 robo depots over three years. Ocado will itself meet the cost of up to £90m for building the first three warehouses, which Kroger will order by Christmas. Ocado expects to recoup its capital expenditure from a cut of Kroger's online sales. To some supermarket chains around the world, an Ocado fulfilment system looks like a means to steal a life-saving march on Amazon. The old jibe about Ocado was: "Starts with zero, ends with zero, worth zero".
