Supermarket Morrisons reports fourth Christmas of sales growth

Wm Morrison reported Christmas sales marginally ahead of expectations and the UK's fourth biggest supermarket kept its full-year forecasts unchanged despite changing consumer behaviour. Overall sales growth was 3.6 per cent, with the other 3 percentage points coming from the group's wholesale activities. Analysts had expected supermarket sales growth of between flat and 0.5 per cent, given that Morrisons was up against tough comparative numbers. In the 10-week period to January 2018, sales were up 2.8 per cent excluding fuel with retail sales rising 2.1 per cent. David Potts, chief executive, said: "This is Morrisons' fourth consecutive Christmas of like for like sales growth during the turnround. Our performance shows colleagues are listening hard and responding to customers, providing consistently great value and good quality when it matters most."
