Union seeks urgent talks with Tesco over job fears

One of the UK's largest labour unions is seeking an urgent meeting with Tesco amid fears that the retailer is about to cut thousands of jobs as it reviews the profitability of its core UK store estate. Tesco employs more than 310,000 people in the UK, according to its 2018 annual report. Unite's national officer for retail distribution, Adrian Jones, said his union would seek talks with Tesco. Unite is recognised at four Tesco distribution centres and has over 800 members who deliver to stores in the UK. Mr Lewis, who took over at the UK's largest grocer in 2014, has form for unsentimentally offloading distractions, especially if they are lossmaking. Last year he closed Tesco Direct, a website where third-party sellers could market their wares and have Tesco fulfil customers' orders.
