Wagamama owner picks ex-HBOS chief for top job

The Restaurant Group, owner of Wagamama and Garfunkel's restaurants, has appointed the ex-chief of HBOS and gambling company Coral as its new chief executive. Y Hornby will take over from Andy McCue who announced his resignation from The Restaurant Group just two months after completing a £550m takeover of the Wagamama noodle chain in November citing "Extenuating personal circumstances". Like Mr McCue, who joined the Restaurant Group from betting company Paddy Power Betfair, Mr Hornby has most recently worked in the gambling industry. Before his roles at GVC and Coral, Mr Hornby headed up HBOS as well as pharmacy group Alliance Boots. The Restaurant Group, which faced shareholder opposition of around two-fifths to the Wagamama deal, hopes the Asian-themed restaurant brand will buoy flagging sales at chains such as Garfunkels and Frankie & Benny's.
