Ofcom chief Sharon White appointed chair of John Lewis

Sharon White has been appointed as the new chair of the John Lewis Partnership after four years running telecoms and media regulator Ofcom. Ms White had been tipped to leave the regulator this year but has privately denied she intended to return to politics or the civil service. Instead she will take the reins at John Lewis at a time of turmoil in the retail sector. Sir Charlie Mayfield, the outgoing chair of John Lewis Partnership, said: "I readily recognise that Sharon is not the conventional retail choice. But these are not conventional retail times, nor is the Partnership a conventional company. Sharon is an inspirational leader with the personal and professional skills to ensure the Partnership continues to innovate and change while at the same time retaining and strengthening our distinctive character and democratic vitality." The appointment marks the first time Ofcom have picked an external candidate as chair.
