Tesco incoming chief: tough but charming
Dave Lewis's replacement at Tesco is hardly a familiar name even in financial circles, but those who know Ken Murphy said his low public profile belied a tough but charming personality with wide global experience. "If he can work that long for Stefano Pessina it shows what kind of a person he is," added the person, referring to Walgreens' famously hard-driving chief executive. Mr Murphy's last role at the company was chief commercial officer, president of global brands and executive vice-president, prompting Tesco chairman John Allan to quip that his job title at the UK company would be rather more concise. Another person who has known Mr Murphy professionally and personally for more than two decades, said he was "a great fish in the executive pond" with wide skills in strategy and branding as well as retail. "What will be new to him is the sheer public profile and external position that being the CEO of Tesco has in the UK," the person added.
