Virgin Media to ditch BT mobile network for Vodafone
Virgin Media has dealt a blow to BT by striking a deal to switch its 3m mobile phone customers from the company over to Vodafone's network. Virgin Media will also launch 5G services via the Vodafone network before that point. Mike Fries, chief executive of Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media, told the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference in September that its deal with BT costs Virgin Media about £200m a year. The agreement between Vodafone UK and Virgin Media brings the two telecoms companies closer together in one of the few markets where they have network overlap but have yet to strike a deal. The Virgin Mobile deal also represents a reversal of strategy for Vodafone's UK business, which only has a small number of mobile virtual network operator deals compared with its rivals.
