Following a bumper 2018 Christmas - when it was the best performer among the 'Big Four' UK supermarkets - Tesco reported 0.4 per cent sales growth on a like-for-like basis in its main region for the six weeks to January 4, 2019, in line with analyst expectations. Booker sales were up 2.3 per cent on a like for like basis over the Christmas period, while UK sales rose just 0.1 per cent. The Christmas period followed a weaker third quarter for its UK stores, with like-for-like sales dipping 0.4 per cent in the 13 weeks to November 2019. Combined Christmas and third quarter sales were up 0.4 per cent in the UK and Ireland on a like-for-like basis and 0.2 per cent on an overall basis at £16.6bn. An overhaul of its smaller central European business saw sales fall significantly there.
