Sharon White has formidable task to restore John Lewis to old glories
By the standards of other heads of national institutions in existential crisis, it looks like Sharon White, the new chair of John Lewis, has it easy. Ms White has to deal with a 1.5 per cent drop in sales. We shouldn't underplay the severity of the situation that the new boss of the John Lewis Partnership finds herself in. Ms White was careful on Thursday to preserve the foundations of John Lewis's national institution status, ruling out a sale of either brand or a change to its employee-owned status. Looming adversity will further test how many people are prepared to pay for the much-vaunted John Lewis values.
