Greggs halts plan to reopen stores after fears of crowds
Greggs has reversed a plan to reopen 20 of its bakery shops next week after an enthusiastic response on social media prompted fears they would be overcrowded with customers. Greggs has built an army of followers on social media since it created a frenzy over its release of a vegan alternative to its popular sausage roll. Greggs insisted its change of heart had nothing to do with the criticism pub operator JD Wetherspoon received over its reopening proposals a day earlier. In an email to staff posted on its website, Greggs' chief executive Roger Whiteside said the company would now operate the trial "Behind closed doors only", with walk-in customers invited "Only when we can be confident of doing so in the controlled manner we intended". Once staff have practised the new ways of working, Greggs may start deliveries before allowing walk-in customers.
