Social care plans due amid Tory tax backlash
A longer-term funding deal to help pay for social care in England after April has not yet been finalised, but it is said to be "Close". The prime minister is facing pressure from his own MPs not to increase National Insurance to pay for social care - which would break a 2019 Conservative manifesto pledge not to raise taxes. BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said it "Sounded like haggling was still going on" over how to solve social care funding. During the last election, the Conservatives made a manifesto commitment not to raise National Insurance, income tax or VAT.Labour has also voiced its opposition to an increase to National Insurance, with shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy arguing that the "Burden of the social care crisis" shouldn't fall on "Supermarket workers and delivery drivers". The fees local authorities pay for care - in a person's own home or a care home - vary hugely.
