M&S nudges up its profit guidance after booming Christmas

Marks and Spencer nudged higher its full-year profit guidance on booming Christmas food and drink sales. Total UK sales were up 8.9 per cent versus the comparable pre-pandemic period, with sales of food soaring 12.4 per cent and general retail takings up 3.2 per cent, M&S reported. UK sales over the Christmas period were up 0.2 per cent on last year. The online retailer left its recently lowered full-year guidance unchanged in a Christmas period trading update that showed total sales growth of 5 per cent and a 4 percentage point deterioration in gross margins. Halfords stuck with full-year profit guidance after reporting retail sales up 5.6 per cent for the fiscal third quarter ended December.
