John Lewis warns staff over bonus as losses widen
John Lewis warned its staff they may not receive a bonus again this year, citing a "Uniquely uncertain" economic outlook. In a letter to the more than 70,000 workers who are the ultimate owners of the business, Dame Sharon White, John Lewis chair, said a successful Christmas was more important than ever this year. John Lewis restored its staff bonus in March this year after cutting it to zero the year before for the first time since the 1950s. It said it would make a one-off cost of living payment of £500 to full-time staff immediately, and had already said it would provide free meals for staff for 14 weeks over the busiest period of its year. The group, which comprises the John Lewis department stores and the Waitrose supermarket chain, made a pre-tax loss of £99mn in the first six months compared with a loss of £29mn last year.
