Do fewer but bigger infrastructure projects, government told
The government is moving too slowly with its infrastructure projects to meet its economic targets and climate goals, a new report suggests. The report pointed out the gap between ambition and reality: the government wants to install at least 600,000 heat pumps each year by 2028 but in 2021 only 55,000 were fitted. The Commission said the government needed "Policy staying power" to deliver long-term goals. It urged government to move away from "Small scale funding and repeated consultations" to focus on fewer but bigger projects and to allow regional centres greater funding and decision making powers. Earlier in March Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the government was investing more than £40bn in transformational transport schemes over the next two financial years across the country.
