Retail staff are being trained to tackle violence from shoplifters after an increase in reports of the crime. The Welsh Retail Consortium said there was a more than a 30% rise in violence and abuse towards staff in Cardiff between 2021 and 2022. John Lewis is one company offering "De-escalation" training, with the WRC saying stores need more support from police. In John Lewis, one of the UK's biggest retailers, staff have been given de-escalation training, which aims to help predict when a situation may become violent.
