Amazon is not to blame for UK property tax woe

The hikes have become an occasion for high street retailers to point out that the property tax system puts them at a disadvantage to online merchants such as Amazon. Property tax questions must also be distinguished from other tax issues involving digital businesses. Amazon pays less property tax simply because it uses less property. The worst outcome would be if shopkeepers' complaints led to a new property tax rule with ad hoc distinctions between types of business - an invitation to fresh distortions and obfuscations. A more valid complaint about the UK property tax system concerns the big gap between business rates and residential ones.
