New chairman du Plessis brings his eclectic CV to BT
When Jan du Plessis was appointed chairman of Rio Tinto in 2009 the venerable mining house was at a low ebb. As Mr du Plessis announced his plans to step down eight years later, the company finds itself in a very different place. "It's easy to forget the mess Rio was in when Jan was made chairman," said another company insider, who described Mr du Plessis as calm, collected and collegiate. Mr du Plessis later said he had found it hard to sell off a company like SABMiller with its century-long heritage. After SABMiller's shareholder gathering in a Park Lane Hotel in London, Mr du Plessis was philosophical, saying: "AB InBev are paying a full price for the company; they can do with the company what they wish . . . that's the way life works and that's fine. That's the way it is."
