Customers and consumption decline for British Gas owner Centrica

Centrica, the owner of British Gas, has lost 261,000 domestic customers so far this year, although it said the decline reflected a decision to focus on value, not just volume. Explaining the drop, Britain's biggest energy supplier to homes highlighted its decision to end so-called "Collective switch" deals, whereby a third party negotiates a better deal for a group of customers. The "Big six" energy companies have been battling to retain customers following a surge in independent, challenger brands. Switching rates have not been sufficient to satisfy ministers that the market is functioning properly for customers. Customer service is improving, we have launched new offers delivering choice for customers and rewarding loyalty and we continue to develop our technology capabilities.
