Amazon Echo turned into covert microphone

Amazon's Echo smart speaker can be hacked to send the audio steam of everything it hears to an attacker, says a researcher. Mark Barnes said the attack on some versions of the Echo let him do almost anything he wanted to it. He said taking over the device was "Trivial" once an attacker had access to an Echo. "To help ensure the latest safeguards are in place, as a general rule, we recommend customers purchase Amazon devices from Amazon or a trusted retailer and that they keep their software up-to-date." More recent versions of the Echo are not susceptible to the same attack.
