BT moves to phase out diesel and petrol-only vehicles

Electric cars are poised for a boost as BT moves to phase out diesel and petrol-only engines in its fleet of nearly 30,000 vehicles. BT has a mixture of vehicles from carmakers including Nissan and Renault that mostly run on diesel, a fuel that UK cities are already trying to limit because of its contribution to air pollution. Oil companies are banking that hybrid cars fuelled at least partly by petrol or diesel will stay popular for many years. If companies such as BT spur demand for pure-electric cars in their fleets it could encourage faster deployment of such vehicles. Mr Dunne said BT had been testing different low carbon options in more than a dozen vehicles for some time and although hybrids that do not run on electric motors alone were more suitable for carrying heavy equipment, this could change.
