Barclays: a nasty case of Qatar

The sober values of the Quaker families that founded Barclays remain those by which it should be judged. On Monday, the Serious Fraud Office charged Barclays a second time over its 2008 emergency fundraising. That is a risk Barclays, which will defend the case, is prepared to take. In 2016, Barclays refused to reach terms with the US Department of Justice over allegations it deliberately sold mortgage bonds to investors that it knew contained "Craptacular loans". Since Mr Staley took office in December 2015, Barclays' share price has fallen 17 per cent, while the FTSE All Share banks index has risen 14 per cent.
