JD Sports: Ashley surpassed
JD Sports boss Peter Cowgill neither looks nor sounds like the typical endorphin-driven brand ambassador for athleisurewear. If, as has been mooted, large brands like Nike want to narrow distribution lists, JD Sports should survive the cull. Three years ago, shares in Mike Ashley's business were worth £8 and JD Sports were at £1. Sports Direct's market value has halved and JD Sports' has tripled. JD Sports' plan to buy US shoe chain Finish Line for $558m is financially sound and will improve its relationship with brands.
