BT: reaching out
Ofcom, the regulator, has criticised the slowness of BT Group in building out a high-speed broadband network, particularly in remote areas. Even BT admits another 18m homes, out of a potential 28m, could have significantly faster broadband speeds. Maintaining a legacy copper network as a cheap solution for households unwilling or unable to pay for faster service will no longer do. Like Elvis, BT is acknowledging a little less talk and a little more action is needed. Belatedly, the UK is starting its march towards a 21st-century communications network.
