UK defence group Babcock appoints first woman chair

Babcock International, Britain's second-largest defence contractor, has appointed its first woman chair, a former oil executive from Royal Dutch Shell. Ms Cairnie will join the board of Babcock as a non-executive director from April 3 and assume the role of chair at the group's annual general meeting in July. Ms Cairnie will need to help Babcock regain the initiative after a torrid year. The company has since been reclassified as an aerospace and defence group. The company looked forward to bringing her "In-depth experience, gained from a broad range of executive and non-executive roles at leading industrial companies, both in the UK and internationally, to benefit Babcock", he added.
