BBC and ITV strike deal to launch streaming service BritBox in UK
ITV and the BBC said on Friday they reached an agreement to launch their joint streaming service in the UK, as Britain's biggest broadcasters join forces to fend off mounting competition from online rivals like Netflix. Carolyn McCall, ITV's chief executive, called the deal a "Milestone moment." Under the agreement, ITV and the BBC will make their content archives available for BritBox viewers. BBC and ITV also plan on commissioning original content from British studios meant specifically for BritBox in addition to adding a "New and regular flow of fresh programmes as soon as they come out of their broadcast and catch-up windows." ITV shares climbed 1.7 per cent in early London dealings, exceeding the rise of 0.5 per cent on the UK's benchmark FTSE 100 index.
