Virgin Media lined up for major high-speed fibre expansion
Liberty Global is preparing to launch a huge expansion of its Virgin Media network in Britain by forming a new company backed by infrastructure funds to build high-speed full-fibre lines outside of urban areas. Virgin Media, the country's second largest broadband provider, would be the anchor tenant but other telecoms companies would potentially be able to access the new network. The push to expand the Virgin Media network would see potentially billions of pounds pumped into new full-fibre lines and comes at a time when political pressure to connect more homes to full-fibre networks is growing. Virgin Media, which only covers half the country due to its historical focus on urban and suburban areas, has already expanded its network under the £3bn "Project Lightning" launched in 2015. The aggressive move to expand the reach of Virgin Media's high-speed network comes as more infrastructure funds target UK full-fibre build.
