Royal Mail gets election boost for declining letter business

The British postal operator had its best performance for five years in its domestic letter business during the six months to September as the European parliament elections boosted volumes. December's UK general election will help the second half of Royal Mail's financial year. Royal Mail warned on Thursday morning that could be the high point for the UK packages, international and letters division for a while. Weak economic growth and an uncertain business environment are expected to hit letter volumes in the second half of the year. In the next financial year, which starts in March, the forecast level of GDP growth means the letter business is likely to fall at a faster pace than Royal Mail's medium term target.
