Opening Quote: Ladbrokes owner rides out storm over gambling

The risks of gambling have been in focus this week after the Gambling Commission announced a ban on people betting with their credit cards. The opprobrium heaped on the gambling industry in recent months does not appear to have affected GVC, the owner of Ladbrokes Coral. The airline said it has agreed a payment plan with the HM Revenue & Customs for a debt of less than £10m, rather than a whole year of the air passenger duty of around £106m. Gemfields, the coloured gemstone specialist that owns the Fabergé jewellery brand, has announced it plans a UK stock market listing in an effort to broaden its investor base. The slide in M&A advisory fees was one of the few lacklustre spots in what was a banner year for most of the largest US investment banks. Gap has abandoned plans to break itself up and announced another senior executive departure.
