BT boardroom fracas ‘own goal’ as company enters critical period

One former BT board member said he did not blame Jansen for acting if his relationship with the chairman had not been working effectively. The less-than-elegant exit of du Plessis - described within the industry as an own goal for BT - came against the backdrop of Jansen's desire to move faster with transformation. Jansen has nonetheless argued that BT needs to transform itself into a technology-style company able to act and react quickly to new opportunities in fields such as artificial intelligence and digital services. BT engaged in a bruising battle with Sky for the best football rights but a detente between the two has meant the telecoms company will enter the latest sale expecting prices to drop. If the company clears its strategic hurdles in the coming months, the boardroom noise could prove to be little more than static on the line.
