Entain hails punters’ return to betting shops as profits rise

Entain, owner of Ladbrokes and Bwin, said gambling in its high street shops had returned to near pre-Covid levels as customers were drawn back to betting machines but that online growth had slowed dramatically. The London-listed gambling group said on Thursday that volumes in its betting shops had edged back to 90 per cent of 2019 levels at the end of last year despite restrictions remaining in several European markets. Customers had initially returned to play on in-store betting machines before the return of the football season prompted more sports bets, it said. Because of its "More certain medium-term outlook", Entain will return £44mn taken in furlough payments from the UK government in 2021 while its betting shops were closed. Entain, which operates 2,700 betting shops in the UK, was one of several companies to see huge upticks in online betting activity as punters turned to internet gambling during lockdowns.
