Adrian Montague to take top role at City lobby group

Financial services lobbying group TheCityUK has appointed Aviva chairman Adrian Montague to chair its advisory council, one of the highest-profile roles in the Square Mile. The advisory council's 70-plus members are drawn from the top ranks of the financial services industry and steer the lobby group's policy positions along with its board, which guides the trade association's day-to-day activities. Sir Adrian will take the role at the end of September, a month before the UK's scheduled departure from the EU. "TheCityUK has a vital role to play in a period of unprecedented change," Sir Adrian said. As an umbrella organisation spanning banks, insurers and law firms with competing aims, the trade association played a key role in presenting a united front for the industry on Brexit, with the advisory council serving as a "One-stop shop" for politicians wanting to speak to the City. The appointment of another chairman with a background in the insurance industry comes after the lobby group stuck with the banking industry when it named a new chair of its board earlier this year.
